NKIEEC Staff

Greg Hossack

Currently on Leave

I’m lucky enough to be the founding principal at this very special location. I have a strong background in Outdoor Environmental Education curriculum development-and passionately believe that North Keppel Island is the best classroom in Australia – and Education Queensland’s best location. Although I have seen lots of changes since we commenced in 1995, I still gain the most pleasure and excitement when sharing outdoor experiences with students, and the Centre’s wonderful staff. Apparently I have been employed by Education Queensland for 30 years...already!

Bill Bowering

LSL - Term 3, 2009

Hello, my name is Bill and I am a teacher at NKIEEC. I have worked at this location since 1999 with the exception of 2005 when I taught at a year seven class at a large local primary school. I enjoy the opportunities I get to work with the variety of age groups that visit this spectacular setting.

Graeme Crigan

I have spent a lifetime on or around the sea, a keen surfer, sailor and professional seaman. I have been the “Skipper” of the Centre’s vessels 'Impact' & 'Gundoo Spirit' for nearly eleven years and have vast experience in supporting the Centre and visiting school groups with their marine based activities. I am always happy to chat to students and explain how 'Gundoo Spirit' and her electronics work. Some people think I have the best job in Education Queensland!

Ian Miller

I was born in Yeppoon and grew up at Farnborough. I went to Yeppoon State and High Schools. After leaving school I started work as a deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel and attained qualifications in handling vessels up to a length of 20 metres. I also gained a good understanding of our oceans. In July 1996, I commenced at North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre as Unit Support Officer. I am responsible for the grounds and the infrastructure of Centre including one of Australia’s largest stand alone alternative energy sites. I enjoy working in this role which includes being Skipper on the Centre's vessel “Gundoo Spirit" on weekends and when Graeme is on leave. I enjoy working with all groups that visit the Centre. My hobbies include 4 wheel driving and I enjoy National Parks as much as possible. I am a member of Capricornia Bushwalkers Club.

Estelle Graham

Hi! I am Estelle-the Centre’s environmentally friendly cleaner. I have 24 years of Leadership and Outdoor Camping experience with Guides Queensland and recently was awarded the Banksia Award and the Wattle Award for my services in the Guides movement. My other interests are gardening, reading and travel.

Mel Walker

My role is to look after the administrative & financial operations of the Centre. I have worked for Education Queensland since 1996, commencing at North Keppel Island EEC in 2002. I acted as School Business Manager for 2 years at a large local primary school before returning to NKIEEC in 2007. North Keppel Island is a beautiful location to work at with great programs for visiting groups. Bonus points for the views across Keppel Bay from the office.....

Graham Channells

I am the relief Unit Support Officer at the Centre. Born in Yeppoon, Queensland. I have spent the last 15 years living and working on various Islands along Queensland’s Eastern seaboard. During this time I gained commercial boating qualifications and experience along with scuba diving to add to my trade in electronics. Formal study includes video and film production, photography and horticulture. I have also worked as a professional musician, playing guitar, keyboards and percussion. I am passionate about conservation and the environment and to this end am fully committed to what NKIEEC has to offer today’s children as they will be tomorrow’s citizens.

Jayne Opperman

Hello! I’m Jayne the contract caterer. I have been in the catering industry since 1998 and have enjoyed creating wonderfully delicious and nutritious meals at the Centre since 2004. I specialise in healthy foods, preferably organic and support local producers. I really enjoy tending my herb garden and have special permission for a small organic garden at the Centre. Visiting students, teachers and parents always want to take me home with them!
